MASTER CLASS with GODFREY DEVEREUX
Theme: “Dynamic Yoga”.
Date: Winter 2009/2010
Who can attend? Suitable for Everyone.
About the guest teacher: Godfrey Devereux is ‘Mr Dynamic Yoga’. He studied in India and has written books and produced popular videos on his work. Since 1996 he has been conducting workshops and retreats worldwide, and runs the Windfire Yoga residential training school, first in Ibiza and currently in France.
About the workshop: Godfrey presents his Dynamic Yoga Training Method and invites students to access the deepest possibilities of being human. This is a pragmatic approach to yoga based on intimate awareness of the impacts of actions being taken in expression and support of the inherent intelligence of the body. He presents a Master Class for Yogatree students. One of the following themes will be the focus of the 3 hour class. Please let us know which topic is of most interest to you.
YAMA, THE BASIS OF PRACTICE
Safe and effective yoga posture practice must be based on the inherent integrity of the body - an integrity that is the result of thousands of millions of years of successful evolution; a success that operates unconsciously through the universal and inviolable principles of formation, structure, transformation, motion and movement. Recognising, acknowledging and honouring this integrity depends on our willingness to listen to the body - a willingness that is naturally supported by the five lenses of yama. This workshop explores the ways in which the body manifests these principles to the sensitive practitioner. This posture class, suitable for all levels and applicable to all styles of yoga practice.
ASANA: THE SPIRITUAL DOORWAY
The eight limbs of yoga are not inherently separate. The only access to the subtle depths of yoga and being human is the physical body. In yoga posture practice this is not just the arena, but also the tool. By connecting the actions that underpin both movement and stillness to their impacts, the body becomes the lattice upon which unity of awareness is woven. As this unity stabilises and deepens, the subtle and incomparably satisfying depths of yoga unfold. On the way, the duality of structure and function, body and mind, matter and spirit are revealed incontrovertibly in action. Posture class, suitable for all levels and applicable to all styles of yoga practice.
YOGA BREATHING
The breath is the link between body and mind. It is therefore at the heart of yoga practice, whether postures or meditation. However if the body is activated with integrity then the breath requires no direct intervention in order to function effectively in support of the practice. This workshop will explore the subtleties of breathing in the light of Patanjali’s definition of pranayama in the Yoga Sutras. It will clarify the utilisation of the whole body as the breathing mechanism in posture practice and the utilisation of the breath as the doorway to meditation. Posture class, suitable for all levels and applicable to all styles of yoga practice.
THE BANDHAS APPLIED
Safe and effective yoga posture practice requires that each part of the body activate according to the biomechanical principles governing movement and action. When the bandhas are recognised to be structurally and energetically necessary to and in each part of the body this process becomes remarkably simple and accessible. This session will clarify the structural activation of the bandhas in each part of the body. This is not only the basis of structural integrity, but the direct means to honour the inherent unity of the body. Posture class, suitable for all levels and applicable to all styles of yoga practice.
THE BANDHAS CLARIFIED
The bandhas are not concepts or esoteric sacraments. They are muscular actions that express the inherent integrity of the body and its functioning. These muscular actions are most safely and effectively activated from the breath. Thereby the inherent unity of body and mind, material and spiritual is clarified simply on the basis of action. This session will clarify the muscular activations that the bandhas actually are, and their relationship to breathing. It will also explore their anatomical, physiological, neurological, energetic and spiritual impacts. Bandha class, suitable for all levels and applicable to all styles of yoga practice.
