WEEKEND with SAM RAO - ONE DAY WORKSHOP
Theme: “My Health My Responsibility – Yoga for Men”.
Date: 25th April 2010

Who can attend? Men of all ages are welcome. Beginners as well as experienced yogis will find this workshop stimulating & informative.

About the guest teacher:  Sam Rao’s instruction is extremely practical and useful for men at any level of interest or ability in yoga.  Whether you have not exercised in years or are a marathon runner, this workshop is for you!  Sam places great emphasis on precision in postures for very specific health benefits.  Sam is a business man and yoga teacher, now proud to be in his 60, and a splendid example of robust wellbeing through the path of yoga.

sam rao yogaAbout the workshop: Sam explains with clarity how, for example, the inner workings of the lower body, i.e. appendix, prostate, bladder and colon, are readily assisted through certain postures that promote wellbeing in these vital organs and prevent the onset of degenerative disease.

All yoga practice is about working the body and quietening the mind.  The asanas (postures) stretch the muscles and exercise the joints; then pranayama (breathing) nourishes the whole body while accentuating concentration and focus in the mind, and every yoga session concludes with a period of relaxation.  The end result is to progressively feel both energised and calm, and ultimately experience a body totally free of discomfort.  Under Sam’s patient guidance, it becomes apparent that each man is responsible for his own wellbeing and can actively participate in the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention through yoga.

Some of Sam's yoga postures:

men's yoga

Utkatasana: The Sitting On A Chair posture is a wonderful warming posture, especially when you begin to hold the posture for 20 to 30 breaths and drop the hips more towards "sitting on a chair".

men's yoga

Virabhadrasana: The Warrior Two posture requires that you use ALL the muscles and joints in the body.  Again, with practice, you will be able to develop the posture to perfection.

Vrkasana: The Tree posture is a wonderful balance posture. Bone loading the ball-socket joint at the hips plus developing muscles in the leg.

Supta Virasana: Practice sitting on the backs of your heels first. Let the front of the feet stretch.  Eventually you get the "bum" on the floor between the feet.  This is a powerful posture and needs guidance thus develop it further with guided instructions.

SirBakasana: I believe that anyone with a sound neck and spine can, under careful instruction and guidance, do a form of head stand. This posture is not for beginners and practic is needed. Body weight on the head works the neck muscles. Inversion works the "under" side of the core body organs such as the Pancreas, Liver, Gall Bladder, Spleen and Kidneys.

Sirsana: Head stand is only recommended for advanced practioners. If and when you start, always use a wall behing you.  Get your teacher to guide you on developing this posture.
